Well here we are a brand new year!!! 2016!! 2015 has now officially come to an end and we now usher in a brand New Year, 2016! A New Year full of possibility and opportunity! Now, it is a very common this time of year for all of us to make some sort of resolution. For example, many people make the pledge each year to be a better person and to disregard our old bad habits and begin some good ones. Many people, including me, make the pledge each year that this will be the year to lose weight, and get fit. It has been said that 75 percent of Americans make the same pledge each New Year to lose weight! You will notice that most gyms in Burlington will be full this time of year because people are trying to honor their New Year’s resolution. However, when February comes around most people will forget about the resolution they made in January and go back to their old habits. I think eating right, exercising is a good thing! It a good that you and I take care of our bodies because the Bible says our body is the temple of God and we should honor God and take care of our bodies. We should work out our bodies for the glory of Christ. But may I encourage you in 2016 not only to work out physically, but also work out your salvation.
The Apostle Paul says the following in Philippians 2:12-13: “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”We see in Verse 12 the key verb and the key thought, "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." That's the main thrust of verse 12. Work out your salvation. Paul says to these Philippian believers, you've got to work out your salvation. What does he mean? Well, this verb is important to note. It is a command to continually making the effort to work out your salvation. Paul is simply saying the salvation that is in you needs to be brought out. When Paul says "Work out your salvation" he is saying you've got to do it. You've got to work it out. There is a commitment if you want to lose weight, you can’t wish it away! You have to work at it. If you want to be a great athlete you have to work at it. In all humility you and I will never grow as a Christian if you don’t work out your salvation. How can you grow your spiritual muscles if you don’t work out? You can’t! If you and I don’t grow spiritually then the appetite of our flesh will grow. It is simple this if you and I are not growing spiritually we are then growing more worldly! I hope and pray in 2016 we work out our salvation.
